Puerto Lumbreras celebrates the International Day of the Gypsy People 2019 (09/04/2019)

The Fundación Secretariado Gitano, in collaboration with the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, has organized a day of coexistence to celebrate the International Day of the Gypsy People.

Every year, April 8 marks the day on which the flag and anthem of the Roma community was established in London in 1971. The objective of the initiative is to continue claiming a dignified and egalitarian treatment for the Roma people.

The day included a manifesto reading and the raising of the gypsy flag with the hymn 'Gelem, gelem' ('Anduve, anduve'), which has been danced by a student of the Ria Pitá association.

The final touch was put on by a theatrical performance and a flamenco concert by the local group 'Sangre flamenca'.

The ceremony was attended by fifty people, among which were the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, M ª Angeles Tunisia, and representatives of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano.

In the days leading up to the celebration of the International Day of the Gypsy People, the Foundation carried out awareness activities in the weekly Friday market in Puerto Lumbreras.

In order to increase awareness and visualization of the cultural codes of the Roma population, various initiatives related to the flag and anthem of this group were carried out.

In the same way, it is worth mentioning that the Foundation also developed awareness actions aimed at the youngest children on April 4.

The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Túnez, stressed that "the main purpose is to recognize the great cultural contribution of the gypsy people to the wealth of our country, the Roma community has a prominent role in the history of Spain."
