The Department of Tourism of the City of Puerto Lumbreras has organized a program of guided visits to the Astronomical Observatory of Puerto Lumbreras from June 15 to September 15.

Specifically, a total of 12 guided tours have been carried out to date, in which 250 people participated, including the most numerous visit (89 attendees) that took place on July 16, coinciding with the partial lunar eclipse.

The Observatory is located in the natural area Cabezo de la Jara, 7 km from Puerto Lumbreras, about 800 meters above sea level.

Members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia are responsible for conducting guided tours at the Observatory.

It is a guided tour, with an approximate duration of 2 hours, in which visitors have the possibility to make different observations, depending on the moon phases.

The meeting begins with an introductory talk about astronomy and science concepts, which explains how the objects will be observed later.

The guided tours include a session of knowledge of the sky with an explanation at a glance, ending with the observation of the most important celestial objects through the telescope located in the dome of the Astronomical Observatory.

Visits are made every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 pm at the Astronomical Observatory of Cabezo la Jara.

In addition, on Monday, August 12, a special visit has been scheduled, coinciding with the traditional "rain of stars" or "tears of San Lorenzo".

Those interested in visiting the Observatory should make their reservations at the Tourist Office, on the phone 652 902 268 or by email at the office@tuertolumbreras.es.

The price per person is 2.5 euros and children under 10 have free admission.

The Councilor for Tourism, Toņi Navarro, has encouraged locals and visitors to meet the stars at the Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory.

He also explained that "from this Observatory, citizens can see the cosmos through a modern and powerful telescope. The quality of the night skies, far from the city, its clean and turbulent atmosphere guarantees a perfect visibility in 90% of summer nights. "

The Observatory has an automated 310 cm diameter dome equipped with a MEADE telescope with 355 mm aperture and 3556 mm focal length.

Similarly, this facility houses a high-quality solar telescope to expand the use of the facilities with daytime activities, and an audiovisual room equipped for talks, conferences and courses. The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory is configured as one of the most large and with less light pollution in the Region of Murcia.
