Lumbrerenses get free glucose checks on the occasion of World Diabetes Day (15/11/2019)

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day.

Puerto Lumbreras today hosts an information and awareness initiative with free glucose controls to detect possible cases of this disease among citizens.

"The objective of this activity is to sensitize the population and improve knowledge about this chronic disease that is characterized by high blood sugar levels," said the mayor of the town, Mª Angeles Tunisia.

An initiative that has the collaboration of the Murcia Regional Diabetes Federation (FREMUD) and Ambulances of Lorca.

For his part, the Councilor for Health, Juan Rubén Burrueco, stressed that "these types of campaigns serve to raise awareness in society about the importance of maintaining a healthy life for the prevention of future diseases. Thus, the council maintains its constant support with diabetes by promoting free glucose controls and informing society about its treatment and prevention. "

And the campaign also includes an initiative from the Department of Commerce, through which nutritionists in the municipality have advised at the same stand on food and healthy habits, and its importance when it comes to preventing type 2 diabetes;

the most common, in which the body does not produce or does not use insulin well although the pancreas can still manufacture it.

In contrast, in type 1 diabetes, the pancreas loses its ability to make insulin because the immune system attacks and destroys the cells responsible for making this hormone.

It is a chronic type that cannot be prevented and requires lifelong treatment.
