The lumbrerenses will decide on what to invest more than 140,000 euros of the municipal budgets (16/11/2016)

30,000 euros will be used in cultural activities and more than 110,000 euros in works so that it is the citizens who choose which projects or actions will be carried out in the municipality.

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras will launch for the first time the participatory budgets, which will allow the lumbrerenses to decide in which part of the public money will be invested.

The residents of Puerto Lumbreras will be able to propose and decide the destination of more than 140,000 euros of the municipal budgets for the year 2017. Specifically, 30,000 euros will be used in cultural activities and more than 110,000 euros in works so that the citizens are the ones who choose What projects or actions will be carried out in these matters in the municipality.

The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Tunisia, explained that "we want to know what are the priorities of the lumbrerenses and give them the opportunity to decide, in a responsible way, how to spend public money."

Tunisia has said that "citizens will have the power to decide which street to fix, what improvements can be made in the parks of the municipality or even what programming of cultural activities they want for next year."

The process will have several phases of participation.

First, there will be several meetings with associations and groups of the municipality to analyze the needs of the municipality and to know their opinions.

Subsequently, a participatory process open to society as a whole, in which citizens can decide which projects the City Council should implement.

The lumbrerenses will be able to vote in telematic way and also through ballot boxes, that will be installed in different places of the municipality.

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras has indicated that "we take a great step in the matter of transparency and participation in launching the first participatory budgets of the history of the municipality."

In addition, Tunisia has indicated that "in the coming years we will expand this game so that the citizens have more and more weight in the decisions that are taken in our locality".

It should be noted that this initiative is part of the Plan for Transparency and Citizen Participation, launched by the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras.

Finally, the Mayor has concluded that "with this initiative we move towards a more participatory democracy model and improve the quality of municipal management."
