"The agro-food cooperative has generated 9 jobs in the municipality with the creation of these two new facilities," explained the Mayor.

Mediterranean Food (Alimer) yesterday inaugurated a new Charter supermarket (Consum franchise) and a gas station in the lumbrerense hamlet of La Estación-Esparragal de Puerto Lumbreras.

The event was attended by the mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Tunisia, the general director of Commerce, Consumption and Administrative Simplification, Francisco Abril, and the president of the Alimer Cooperative, Julián Díaz.

The turnover of 2016 closed around 170 million euros, with growth forecasts of more than 7% for the next fiscal year.

Alimer has 1,655 members and employs over 1,000 people in its warehouses.

Mª Ángeles Tunisia has highlighted that "Mediterranean Food has contributed greatly to the creation of new jobs in the municipality and is a key piece in the socio-economic fabric."

It should be mentioned that Alimer was born in 2006 from eight societies of the Guadalentín and Vega Alta Valley.

The resulting cooperative produces a wide range of foods: sweet fruit, vegetables, watermelons and melons;

vegetable preserves;

flowers and ornamental plants;

pork, kid and beef;

dairy products and supplies (feed, fertilizers, pesticides, hardware, agricultural machinery and fuels).
