The work done in the Rambla de Vilerda help reduce the effects caused by torrential phenomena, reducing the drag of aggregates and erosion

The director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernández, together with the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, and the business area director of La Caixa in Lorca, Eugenio Jose Ruiz, today inaugurated the Board Interpretation Youth Hostel Cabezo de la Jara in Puerto Lumbreras, which has been remodeled.

They have also visited the environmental improvement works carried out in this natural environment as well as the Rambla de Vilerda.

All these works represented an investment of 255,000 euros financed by the Obra Social La Caixa, which have generated a total of 1,500 wage work, some of which were for people at risk of social exclusion.

Pablo Fernandez said that "the head of the Jara has a high environmental value, as has been proposed, along with the Rambla de Nogalte, as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and will become part of the European Network of Natural Natura 2000. "

The new facilities have room for interpretation about 200 square meters which is located a reception, an audiovisual room, and a permanent exhibition area is divided into five thematic groups: flora, fauna, landscapes, human and space natural.

The director general said the new equipment "will help promote and disseminate the natural heritage of the municipality through the interpretation of the different elements of their natural environment."

Environmental adaptation works in the vicinity of Cabezo de la Jara have covered, among other things, the silvicultural treatments in the forest, with thinning, pruning and disposal of waste, the creation of botanical trails in the vicinity of hostel and auxiliary opening bands along several paths.

The aim of these works, according to Pablo Fernandez, is "to ensure long term sustainability of forests of Aleppo pine and increase vegetative vigor and reduce their level of flammability and increase its resistance to fire spread if fire. "

Improved Vilerda boardwalk

The manager also highlighted regional environmental improvement works carried out on the Rambla de Vilerda, located in the catchment area of the Rambla de Nogalte.

The actions have involved the construction of seven embankments to mitigate hydraulic masonry erosion in gullies that flow to the boardwalk Vilerda and jetties of five sections of gabion walls and three breakwater to protect the margins along channel.

According to Pablo Fernández, such work "will help reduce the effects caused by torrential phenomena, reducing the drag of aggregates and erosion along streams and gullies."

He added, "this action is encouraged to strengthen the dynamic equilibrium regulating vegetation and water resources in the area by regulating the runoff, while the channels are stabilized."
