The session Municipal Council has approved a motion that incorporates 20 new measures to increase environmental improvements coinciding with the International Year of Biodiversity.
The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, presided over the formation of the new Environment Sector Council is created in the municipality to "enhance the local environmental actions and to evaluate and follow up of more than 150 measures that triggers the session to protect the environment and combat climate change. "
Specifically, the new Environment Sector Council is composed initially of 12 citizens from various backgrounds and sectors of the municipality as the council, the Confederation of Employers ASEPLU, the Chamber of Commerce of Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras, and various representatives of sectors related to the environment.
The Council was established as the centralized management authority, which will channel the participation of citizens in municipal affairs relating to the environment.
Among other functions, the council shall serve for monitoring the impact of environmental strategies in the population lumbrerense, study the results of actions, and propose new measures to enhance environmental compliance and public awareness.
On the other hand, among other features highlights of the new body to advise the Local Government on matters relating to the environment and issue reports on this matter as requested.
"In this way the new Sectoral Council is constituted as an advisory body, open and plural which increases the participation of lumbrerenses involved in environmental development of Puerto Lumbreras," said the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.

Environmental Commitment
The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras is conducting an ongoing and coordinated efforts in areas of conservation and environmental improvement initiatives such as Ecopuerto, Covenant of Mayors, Local Agenda 21 or Ecopuerto Plan.
On the occasion of the declaration by the General Assembly of the United Nations of 2010 as International Year of Biodiversity, the council approved a motion to be found scores of new measures to promote the environment increase.
These measures include developing a catalog of natural monuments to promote their protection, campaigns to reduce plastic bag consumption, or the promotion of environmental volunteers through the development of workshops.

Finally, the motion includes other actions such as increased use of renewable energies in all areas of municipal action, will draw up an improvement plan cover and afforestation in the municipality, and promote and implement courses, campaigns and workshops to promote recycling, clean and responsible consumption.
