The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory, the only one in the whole region to enjoy the 'Lagrimas de San Lorenzo' next Saturday (06/08/2018)

Until September 15 there will be guided tours to the Astronomical Observatory every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 pm

Monday, August 6, 2017. As every year, the Department of Tourism and Culture of Puerto Lumbreras encourages you to enjoy the phenomenon of meteorite rain called perseidas and popularly known as 'Tears of San Lorenzo' from the Observatorio Astronómico del Cabezo de la Jara .

An appointment that this year will take place next Saturday August 11.

Located in the natural place Cabezo de la Jara, 7 kilometers from the city center and 800 meters above sea level, the Lumbrerense Observatory is in an ideal location for observing the sky, with unique facilities in all the Region of Murcia.

Members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, Astromurcia, will be responsible for accompanying visitors in this special experience.

The observations are made from the esplanade of the Youth Hostel because, in a timely manner, the telescopes will be moved there, although anyone who wishes may visit the Observatory facilities.

It is necessary to point out that these are guided tours that take place throughout the year.

With an approximate duration of two hours, visitors have the possibility of making different observations, depending on the lunar phases.

So, during the summer season the Department of Tourism and Culture has organized a program of guided tours of the Astronomical Observatory of Puerto Lumbreras until September 15 every Wednesday and Saturday at 22.00.

The meeting begins with an introductory talk on concepts of astronomy and science, which explains how the objects that will later be observed.

The guided tours include a session of knowledge of the sky with an explanation to the naked eye, ending with the observation of the most important celestial objects through the telescope located in the dome of the Astronomical Observatory.

The Councilor for Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez, has encouraged Lumbrerenses and visitors to get to know the stars at the Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory.

He also explained that "from this Observatory, citizens can see the cosmos through a modern and powerful telescope."

To this he added that "the quality of the night skies, away from the city, its clean atmosphere and without turbulence guarantees perfect visibility in 90% of summer nights."

The Observatory has an automated dome 310 cm in diameter equipped with a MEADE telescope of 355 mm opening and 3556 mm focal length.

In the same way, this installation houses a high-quality solar telescope to expand the use of the facilities with daytime activities, and an audiovisual room equipped for lectures, conferences and courses. The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory is one of the most large and with less light pollution of the Region of Murcia.

The price per person is 2.5 euros and children under 10 have free admission.
