Until September 15 there will be guided tours to the Astronomical Observatory every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 pm
Qualified as one of the best places in the Region of Murcia for the nocturnal observation of the celestial vault, the environment of the Cabezo de la Jara Youth Hostel and the Astronomical Observatory facilities received this Saturday the visit of hundreds of people who chose this place to observe the 'Tears of San Lorenzo'.
On a clear night, without light pollution and guided by experts from the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, Astromurcia, the meteor seekers were able to enjoy an ideal night for that purpose, being able to observe even celestial objects such as Jupiter, Saturn and Mars.
This was possible thanks to the ideal location of the Cabezo de la Jara natural site, 7 kilometers from the city center and about 800 meters above sea level.
It is also necessary to emphasize that the Lumbrerense Observatory is positioned as a unique facility throughout the Region of Murcia for this purpose.
Members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, Astromurcia, were responsible for accompanying visitors in this special experience.
The observations were made from the esplanade of the Youth Hostel to "be able to accommodate the high number of visitors," as highlighted Jerez.
Thus, in a timely manner, the telescopes were moved there, although visits to the Observatory facilities were also possible.
The Department of Tourism and Culture of Puerto Lumbreras offers guided tours throughout the year.
With an approximate duration of two hours, visitors have the possibility of making different observations, depending on the lunar phases.
So, during the summer season, it will be possible until September 15 every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 pm.
The meeting begins with an introductory talk on concepts of astronomy and science, which explains how the objects that will later be observed.
The guided tours include a session of knowledge of the sky with an explanation to the naked eye, ending with the observation of the most important celestial objects through the telescope located in the dome of the Astronomical Observatory.
The Councilor for Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez, has encouraged Lumbrerenses and visitors to get to know the stars at the Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory.
He also explained that "from this Observatory, citizens can see the cosmos through a modern and powerful telescope."
To this he added that "the quality of the night skies, away from the city, its clean atmosphere and without turbulence guarantees perfect visibility in 90% of summer nights."
The Observatory has an automated dome 310 cm in diameter equipped with a MEADE telescope of 355 mm opening and 3556 mm focal length.
In the same way, this installation houses a high-quality solar telescope to expand the use of the facilities with daytime activities, and an audiovisual room equipped for lectures, conferences and courses. The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory is one of the most large and with less light pollution of the Region of Murcia.
Those interested in visiting the Observatory should make their reservations at the Tourist Office, on the telephones 652 902 268/968 43 61 53 or at the email oficinadeturismo@puertolumbreras.es.
