The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has received the "Astrade 2018" award for the recent installation of pictograms in places of tourist interest and public buildings in the municipality.
With this measure the Consistory aims to improve the social integration of people with autism and facilitate the cognitive accessibility of people with autism spectrum disorders.
The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Túnez, was in charge of collecting the award and stressed that "through this initiative we create spaces and understandable environments that encourage participation and autonomy, regardless of personal characteristics or conditions, facilitating inclusion social and cognitive and sensory accessibility Visual aids are very useful tools for people with autism to solve everyday situations ".
Some of the places in which the initiative has been launched are the Municipal Library Network, educational centers, public parks, local police offices, sports facilities, Nogalte Castle, Astronomical Observatory or cultural centers.
The integrating action, launched by the City Council in collaboration with Astrade, is being developed thanks to the support of Fundación La Caixa, which has awarded a grant of 4,000 euros to the Consistory for the execution of the project.
The general objective of this initiative has been to advance the universal accessibility and equal opportunities for people affected with autism spectrum disorders, or other communication problems, while at the same time becoming aware of society.
It should be noted that recently the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras agreed, through the Municipal Plenary, the implementation of programs to raise awareness and dissemination of all Autism Spectrum Disorders and the development of awareness campaigns on autism, especially in schools , in order to facilitate the social inclusion of these people and promote respect for diversity since children.
