The official chronicler of Puerto Lumbreras, Juan Romera, passes away (29/12/2018)

The official chronicler of Puerto Lumbreras, Juan Romera Sánchez, died this morning at 86 years of age.

Although he was born in Mazarrón in 1932, he has been considered a Lumbrerense because he moved at six years of age with his family to Puerto Lumbreras.

The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Túnez, stressed that "he is a man much loved by Lumbrerenses, who has contributed greatly to the recovery and preservation of local history."

In parallel to his professional performance, Juan Romera devoted most of his life to researching the history of Puerto Lumbreras.

The result of his work is the reconstruction of the historical origins, divulgation of customs and traditions.

He also disseminated, through his books, the biographies of illustrious figures and Lumbrerean writers who remained forgotten.

In 1955 he obtained by opposition the post of Chief of Telegraphs, Postmaster and Postal Box with destination in Puerto Lumbreras.

In 1967, Romera obtained the Diploma of Technician in Public and Human Relations with the qualification of outstanding and by Ministerial Order of May 6, 1967 was appointed Officer of the Special Executive Body of Telecommunications.

A year later he was appointed informative correspondent for the newspaper La Verdad de Murcia, where he won numerous awards for his news and reports.

From 1974 to 1980 he was also a sports correspondent for the Murcian Football Federation.

His work is endorsed by prestigious institutions and is characterized by documentary rigor.

He was frequently required to give lectures in educational and cultural centers, as well as, by various Spanish and foreign media for interviews and cultural dissemination programs on issues related to the municipality or the Guadalentín region.

About them, he has published numerous books and more than a hundred articles in different magazines.

In 2000 he joined the Royal Academy Alfonso X el Sabio, based in Murcia, as Corresponding Academician. In 2005, the Municipal Corporation of the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras named him Official Chronicler. One year later he became part of the Association of Official Chroniclers of the Region of Murcia and in 2010 he became a member of the Royal Spanish Association of Official Chroniclers (the prestigious RAECO).

In 2012, Juan Romera received the distinction of Adoptive Son of Puerto Lumbreras for his extensive research, compilation and dissemination of the history of this city.

A few months ago, the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras approved a motion at the Municipal Plenary, on the proposal of the Mayor's Office, to grant the name "Cronista Juan Romera Sánchez" to the Municipal Archive.

On Sunday the funeral mass will be celebrated at 11.00 in the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and then the subsequent transfer to the San Damian municipal cemetery in Puerto Lumbreras.
