The Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras, together with the different political parties with municipal representation, and with the support of Aseplu, have ratified the bases of a new project to work jointly in the defense of farmers and ranchers who develop their activity in irrigated land.
The board of directors of the Community of Irrigators, the mayor of the town and the spokespersons of the political groups with representation in the Municipal Plenary met on January 16 to address this issue.
At the meeting they reached different agreements unanimously to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural and livestock sector of Puerto Lumbreras.
Among them, transfer to the Plenary the approval of a Municipal Ordinance declaring the irrigated agricultural area incompatible with the installation of photovoltaic solar power plants and / or any project that negatively affects agriculture and livestock.
"With this agreement begins a new stage of cooperation between the Community of Irrigators, social agents and all political groups at the service of the general interest of all citizens of the municipality." It is such an important issue that, under no circumstances will use in the political debate ", stand out from the Community of Irrigators.
In this sense, from the entity have stressed that "the installation of photovoltaic energy plates would affect the development of the primary sector in the town. The Lumbrerense economy is mainly based on agriculture and livestock.The primary sector plays a key role in the creation of jobs, which could be seriously damaged in the hypothetical case that the photovoltaic solar power plants become implanted in irrigated land ".
55% of direct and indirect jobs in the municipality, as well as 70% of total revenues (GDP), correspond directly to these sectors.
Currently, Puerto Lumbreras has one of the highest employment rates in the Region of Murcia with 90.15%.
Undoubtedly, supported by a traditional sector, the agricultural and livestock sector.
In the same way, agriculture generates indirect employment in machinery, drip irrigation companies, nurseries, technical personnel for crop control, horticultural warehouses and transporters, among others.
"This generation of employment has a very positive impact on all businesses, guaranteeing the employment, progress, well-being and development of Puerto Lumbreras."
Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras (CRPL)
It is a Public Law Entity formed by more than 880 comuneros, who are dedicated to agriculture and livestock.
All of them decided unanimously, in the General Assembly held in April 2018 and ratified in November last year, to defend the entire area of ​​the irrigated perimeter of Puerto Lumbreras so as not to lose the crops that exist or the possible development and expansion thereof. in the near future.
More than 70% of the families of Puerto Lumbreras live thanks to agriculture and livestock.
The CRPL has fought for more than 20 years to promote and develop an agriculture and livestock sustainably as exists today in Puerto Lumbreras, getting water supplies with great effort and difficulty, which could be jeopardized in the event that the plants were installed solar photovoltaic on irrigated land.
