More than 200 children from the Purísima Concepción school in the Lumbrerense hamlet of La Estación-Esparragal participated this morning in the second edition of the School Duathlon, organized by the school itself, in collaboration with the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras.
Students of the prebenjamín categories (1st and 2nd), youngest (3rd and 4th) and alevín (5th and 6th) have competed in the sports competition alternating with running and cycling.
The distances have been different according to the category, covering on foot from 250 to 1500 meters;
and in the case of the bicycle, from 1 to 4 kilometers.
The main objective of the activity has been, in addition to rewarding the triumph of schoolchildren, encouraging sports practice from an early age.
Children from 3 to 5 years have also had a space in this test, although three-year-olds have only done the race on foot.
The course of the competition has been established in the vicinity of the public school Purísima Concepción.
The Councilor for Physical Activity and Sports, Juan Rubén Burrueco, has praised the educational community of the center for launching this initiative "that encourages healthy habits and resistance, covering two disciplines with great demand in the municipality such as athletics and cycling".
