Since, in 1906, the German neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer described the first case of the disease that bears his name, the perception that society has of this pathology has varied considerably.
The incessant aging of the population in recent decades has made Alzheimer's one of the most serious and prevalent health problems in developed countries, which in Spain already affects almost one million people and that causes an absolute family environment homelessness situation.
World Day is an act of special importance and importance because Alzheimer's disease, known as the “epidemic of the 21st century”, is a disease that affects not only the people who suffer from it, since it is also shared by all those people who they live day to day with them (family and caregivers), and those who strive to discover more about their causes and treatments (researchers and health specialists).
They all share the same challenge: to contribute to improving the quality of life of the person suffering from this crude disease.
This day we want to make the voice of the 3.5 million people affected by Alzheimer's disease estimated to exist today in Spain, among sick and family caregivers.
We have a long way to go and we must achieve it by sharing with the rest of society the knowledge of this disease, its importance and the consequences it presents for the people who suffer it, for their families and caregivers.
All the events we organize for its celebration have a double objective;
on the one hand, sensitize Spanish society about this epidemic of the 21st century, as well as its socio-sanitary consequences;
and, on the other hand, to develop a health education campaign aimed at promoting the prevention of this pathology.
The purpose of this commemoration is to request the support and solidarity of the general population, institutions and official bodies.
World Alzheimer's Day should be a time of encounter, an opportunity to raise awareness in society and promote a positive and supportive change in public opinion, who can influence long-term regulatory and decision-making bodies.
The motto chosen by the Spanish Alzheimer Confederation (CEAFA) on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day 2019 is “EVOLUTION”.
With this simple word he seeks reflection, but, above all, raise awareness that “times change” and, with them, everything related to dementias in general and Alzheimer's in particular, as well as the consequences that it generates in people and in society.
The passage of time has generated new needs.
If the needs evolve, the answers must also be done to the same extent.
