This European Mediation Day is celebrated on Tuesday, January 21, a date that coincides with the approval of the first European mediation legislative text, on January 21, 1998. Since then, this alternative tool for self-compiling conflict resolution has gone gaining ground, applying in the Family, Civil and Social, Commercial and Criminal fields, thanks to the impulse of the judicial institutions and the legal profession.
Mediation involves solving the conflict through dialogue and mutual understanding, with the help of a third party, the mediator, who does not make any decisions, but rather impartially and through confidential interviews with the parties, tries to help them understand each other and agree on the issues to be regulated.
Mediation arises from the need to seek alternative ways of resolving conflicts, when the judicial process is not satisfactory, before the collapse it presents and before the solutions that, taken by a third party (the Judge), do not satisfy any of the parties, always having a loser and a winner.
In the field of the family mediation has a special importance.
These are issues in which very personal implications and an immensely emotional component are raised, which can affect minors and where, despite the breakup of the couple, the parties involved do not break their family ties, they remain parents.
Mediation has obvious advantages in these cases, since experience shows that a solution taken by mutual agreement by the parties usually has a vocation of permanence that does not occur in solutions given in judgments of contentious judicial proceedings, in which the last decision take a third party, oblivious to the operation and family organization more appropriate.
Mediation is showing itself as an effective, more durable, faster, less expensive way of resolving conflicts in many areas (family, school, mortgage, health, neighborhood ... etc).
In this sense, the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has had a Municipal Mediation Service for more than six years, under the Department of Social Policy.
A resource that offers the citizens of Puerto Lumbreras the possibility of resolving their discrepancies with the help of a professional.
The mediator acts in a neutral and impartial manner, facilitating the parties that meet their needs by reaching agreements, which is why in mediation "everyone wins".
This service deals with family, couple, neighborhood, school conflicts ... etc.
At the head of the Municipal Mediation Service there is a social worker, professional mediator expert, parental coordinator, and a local police officer with training in mediation.
Last year 2019 approximately more than 50 people passed through this service in 2019.
To access this service you must be registered and reside in the locality.
You must request an appointment at the Social Services Center (located at Avenida Región Murciana, 9), or by calling 968402071. The service is free.
It is a completely confidential and voluntary procedure.
