The municipal group of the Popular Party in the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras will take a motion to request the Government of Spain to lower the VAT on masks, gloves and disinfectant hydrogels from 21 percent to 4 percent. The central government has refused to reduce the VAT rate applicable to this basic element of protection against COVID-19, using the false argument that European regulations "prohibit the possibility of lowering" this tax on the sale of masks.
However, there is a report from the European institutions, from last April, that says that they will not sanction any country for this VAT reduction. In other neighboring countries such as France, Germany, Italy or Portugal the VAT is well below 21 percent, reaching 5 percent and even in some cases being totally exempt in these essential goods and mandatory use in this pandemic.
For a family of four, the monthly cost of masks with the maximum VAT rate (21%), can range between 70 and 150 euros depending on the type (hygienic, surgical or self-filtering) according to the Consumer and User Organization (OCU), which in current times represents a significant economic burden. "Since last April, the Popular Party has requested the Government to lower the VAT rate applicable to masks on repeated occasions but has always obtained a negative response.
It is urgent that this request be addressed, since few things result today more necessary and irreplaceable than the pharmaceutical elements of barrier, protection and prevention against the contagion of the coronavirus ", say sources from the municipal group of the Popular Party in the Puerto Lumbreras City Council.
