The municipality of Puerto Lumbreras received 4% more tourists in 2016, compared to the previous year.

Puerto Lumbreras has registered more than 9,100 visits during 2016, according to data provided by the local Tourist Information Office.

Specifically, the most visited tourist infrastructure has been the Castle of Nogalte and its Cave Houses themed with more than 3,200 visitors.

The Thematization of the Cave Houses consists of the adaptation of the tourist areas, through a touristic-cultural itinerary with which the visitors know the existence of the Islamic fortress.

The route offers footpaths through the surroundings of the Castle of Nogalte, with several stops in 8 themed spaces that offer the only Cave Houses visitable of the Region of Murcia.

In this sense, the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras received 4% more tourists in 2016, compared to the previous year.

The Councilor for Tourism and Culture, Mª Victoria Jerez, stressed that "they are positive data that encourage us to continue working in this line so that our municipality consolidates itself as a tourist destination at regional and national level."

The data reveal that the tourists who have visited the municipality are mainly of Spanish nationality coming from cities like Alicante, Granada, Murcia or Barcelona.

On the other hand, numerous foreign visitors have also visited the municipality during 2016, especially people from France and the United Kingdom.

The councilor of Tourism and Culture explained that "the increase of visitors coincides with the implementation of improvements in the Medina Nogalte tourist environment and the construction of a new Astronomical Observatory, one of our main tourist attractions of the municipality."

The Astronomical Observatory of Puerto Lumbreras is located in the natural spot Cabezo de la Jara and is one of the largest and with less light pollution of the Region of Murcia.

Only during the summer months registered more than 1,700 visits and is configured as the second most visited tourist resort of the municipality in 2016.

It should be noted that another tourist element created in the last year has been the recreation of a hydraulic infrastructure in the Casa del Cura.

It is a scale system that has various elements related to water culture such as a well, Ferris wheel, cistern, a mill and a laundry.

With this infrastructure can be known the operation of a system of capture, storage and distribution of water, typical of traditional agriculture of Puerto Lumbreras.
