"The results have been very interesting in documenting a domestic space consisting of the remains of several homes, a grinding area and a furnace with a concave bottom."
About fifteen students from different parts of Spain and countries like Puerto Rico or Italy have moved to Puerto Lumbreras to study first hand a model of a medieval castle, the Castle of Nogalte.
For two weeks, students have participated in an archeology course organized by the University of Murcia, through CEPOAT (Center for Studies of the Middle East and Late Antiquity), in collaboration with the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras and the company Intellectual Heritage .
The work has been carried out in two distinct areas of the fortified enclosure.
An excavation area has been located in the tri-gate.
In this sense, the director of Intellectual Heritage, Juan Gallardo, explained that "the results have been very interesting to document a domestic space composed of the remains of several homes, a grinding area and a furnace with concave bottom."
On the other hand, the easternmost part of the fortification has also been intervened.
Gallardo emphasized that "the excavation of this area has allowed us to document the fortification enclosure, also appreciating the existence of various constructive phases of the medieval period. On the surface of the interior, we have documented the existence of two rooms, one with Samples of having had a domestic functionality ".
The course, which has been closed this morning, has focused on key aspects such as stratigraphy, photogrammetry and topography.
The program has been divided into 11 blocks, among which the techniques of archaeological excavation, field archaeological drawing, reservoir planimetry and reservoir restoration stand out.
The students were divided into groups of 5 people and studied the different blocks using theory and field practices.
It should be noted that the course has been developed under the concept of an international course, so the languages used have been English and Spanish.
The Councilor for Culture and Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez, stressed that "the course has been closed with resounding success based on the results obtained."
In addition, he said that "during these two weeks new doubts have arisen and new hypotheses have been raised that require future interventions to obtain information from phases prior to the last medieval occupation of Nogalte Castle."
"Opened by excavations"
In parallel, the activity "Opened by excavations" was launched in the site of the Castle of Nogalte.
In particular, citizens have participated in guided tours to know the historical heritage of the municipality.
The Councilor for Tourism and Culture, Mª Victoria Jerez, explained that "this proposal has been a good way to bring heritage and archeology to citizens, as well as a friendly way to approach the history of the municipality."
Visitors were given a brief historical introduction of the site by archaeologists, after which the works were explained, both the remains found and the system of registration of the same.
