The goal of this initiative is to advance universal accessibility and equal opportunities for people with autism spectrum disorders.
The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras will install pictograms in public buildings and places of interest in the municipality to improve the social integration of people with autism spectrum disorders.
Specifically, the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, the Library Network, Cultural Center, Tourism Office, Municipal Nurseries Network, public parks, Youth Space, Sports Center, Local Police, Homes of the 3rd Age, educational centers, will be indicated with pictograms. Integral Center for People with Disabilities, as well as places of tourist interest such as the Castle of Nogalte or the Cave Houses.
The mayor, Mª Ángeles Túnez, explained that "we are going to create understandable spaces and environments that encourage participation and autonomy, regardless of personal characteristics or conditions, facilitating social inclusion and cognitive and sensory accessibility." Visual aids are tools very useful to solve everyday situations. "
The general objective of this initiative is to advance universal accessibility and equal opportunities for people affected with autism spectrum disorders, or other communication problems, while at the same time becoming aware of society.
It should be noted that this new integrating action, launched by the City Council, is being developed thanks to the collaboration of Fundación La Caixa, which has awarded a grant of 4,000 euros for the execution of the project.
The mayor stressed that "pictograms are not only useful for people with autism, but also serve people who do not know the local language well or have difficulties understanding information such as small children, elderly at a loss cognitive, people with intellectual disabilities or with altered sensory perceptions ".
It should be noted that the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras approved a motion, through the Municipal Plenary, to favor the inclusion of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) last January.
Therefore, a broad set of measures will be developed that will respond to the mental health needs of people with ASD.
In addition to the installation of pictograms, it has been agreed to implement awareness and dissemination programs for all Autism Spectrum Disorders and to develop awareness campaigns about autism, especially in educational centers, in order to facilitate social inclusion of these people and promote respect for diversity since children.
