The gypsy flag flies in Puerto Lumbreras on the occasion of the International Day of the Gypsy People (06/04/2018)

The interpretation of the hymn "Gelem, Gelem", the hoisting of the gypsy flag, a flamenco concert and the reading of a manifesto have served to celebrate the International Day of the Gypsy People.

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has scheduled a series of activities in homage to the Roma community, coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of the Gypsy People on April 8.

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Mª Ángeles Túnez, and the provincial director of Fundación Secretariado Gitano Murcia, Jesús Salmerón, presided over the act of hoisting the flag of the Gypsy community with the official hymn "Gelem, Gelem" in the gardens of Paco Rabal.

Blue and green flag represents the sky and the earth, and counts with a wheel of sixteen radios in red color, which symbolizes the freedom of the gypsy people, distributed all over the world.

The act was enlivened by a flamenco dancer from the Ria Pitá flamenco association.

Also, at the end of the event, the flamenco group "Los chatos de Puerto Lumbreras" gave a concert at the Casa de los Duendes Cultural Center

The programming continues today with awareness activities and distribution of information leaflets in the weekly market.

In the same way, recreational activities will be carried out in the stand of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano to attract the participation of the citizens.

One of the most anticipated activities will be the reading of the manifesto to be held on Sunday, April 8, the International Day of the Gypsy People, at the Socio-Cultural Center Casa de los Duendes from 6.30 pm.

Next, the Aires de Veleta group will offer a concert to the attendees.

It is worth noting that this day is celebrated in remembrance of the First Roma / Gypsy World Congress held in London on April 8, 1971, in which the official flag and the official gypsy hymn were instituted.

The mayor of the town stressed that "Puerto Lumbreras joins for the second year in a row a goal that aims to make visible the reality of the Roma people and their culture and denounce the situations of discrimination with which they often face."

It should be noted that, last week, the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras approved in plenary the adhesion of the municipality to the campaign promoted by Fundación Secretariado Gitano "Partir de Cero" with the aim of eliminating discrimination against the Roma people.

The campaign includes the dissemination of an animated short film with the voice of the actor Antonio Resines, which tells the story of Samara, a young gypsy girl who starts her journey to "Ciudad Cero", the city of equality.

The mayor of the town, Maria Angeles Tunisia, stressed that "we want a society in which no person has to travel the path of inequality, and in which everyone has the same opportunities."

Currently, the City is developing a project for the care and integration of the Roma community, in collaboration with Fundación Secretariado Gitano, which includes a playroom service, training workshops for mothers and fathers, reading and writing courses, as well as other guided activities. to the improvement of employment.
