The Rural Development Department of the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, has launched the fifth consecutive year the campaign against fruit fly in citrus, which broadcasters have begun shipping this week .

In the campaign last year, participated in Puerto Lumbreras a total of 60 farmers and agricultural companies both table grapes and citrus.

Were delivered by technicians the City, over 5,000 baits and 5,000 capsules of insecticide, more than 300 traps M3 for individual trees, resulting in a significant reduction of chemical treatments on farms in the municipality.

The aim with this campaign is to reduce the use of insecticides against fruit flies, reflecting in a lower cost of labor for the farmer and lower emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere, reduced exposure of farmers to contact insecticides , lower chemical residues on fruit that will later be consumed by the population and less damage to the environment.

This campaign is compulsory for all plantations of oranges, clementines and tangerines early and mid-season (collected between September and December), and early plantings of table grapes.

The campaign is also mandatory for home gardens in which trees are unique such as figs, prickly pears, etc.

Farmers in Puerto Lumbreras, which participated in the campaign in previous years, will be scheduled through the Office of Information to Farmers and Ranchers of the Department of Rural Development to proceed with the removal of baits and insecticides for each flycatcher.

José María Parra, agriculture and livestock Councillor explained that the farmer must buy the traps he deems suitable and validated and apply the purchase invoice in municipality of Esparragal where each will receive a free compact bait and insecticide for each flycatcher.

After removing the bait and insecticide, farmers immediately proceed to install trees, as they indicate the City staff also will be given the instructions to activate the attractants of fruit fly traps and correctly use .

Parra pointed out that "this campaign will reduce the use of insecticides against fruit flies and therefore reduces the farmer's labor and also will be fewer chemical residues found in fruit '
