In the past year, the quality indexes of recyclable waste in the locality have risen from 65% to 95%, putting the full process of recycling.
The City Council launched an information campaign and organized educational workshops aimed at school children, housewives and the elderly to increase public awareness of recycling and waste separation.
"Puerto Lumbreras Cares' is constituted as a measure of Ecopuerto 2008 - 2012, a Strategic Plan which includes over 150 specific measures to promote the environment and combat climate change.

In total, the site recorded over the past year 267.000kg of waste deposited in recycling containers.
The Mayor of the town, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, explained that "Puerto Lumbreras Cares' is constituted as a strong investment in human and material resources. The balance in the last year in this area is very positive and we continue to work from consistory the town embracing the challenge of sustainability through waste separation for recycling. "
On the other hand, during the last year the municipality has also increased considerably the quality of waste which is then recycled, from 65% to 95%.
"These data indicate that residues of each type to be found in the town for recycling are quality, and just include improper waste. This favor comprehensive recycling process," says Sanchez.
Specifically, the Plan of street cleaning 'Puerto Lumbreras cares', included the installation of 513 new trash cans with 2,400 liters capacity for waste collection, increased the technical and human resources for street cleaning, and were launched two new Ecoparks in the municipality, one fixed and one mobile offering services for the collection of household waste that can not be placed in conventional containers.
Citizen Awareness
In addition to new services and actions to street cleaning and waste collection in the municipality, the municipality and Cespa cleaning company, launched a campaign which included distribution of over 10,000 information leaflets to raise awareness about how the new street cleaning plan not only provides tips for reducing waste generation and increase reuse and recycling of waste.
In addition, the City Council has made year-round program of training activities aimed at different groups as school children, housewives and senior citizens, to know the operation of the new services.
In this sense, Sanchez concluded explaining that "it is very important to raise public awareness to make efficient use of all services, and assist in the sustainable development of Puerto Lumbreras.
