Puerto Lumbreras powers more than 60 specific actions to reduce CO2 emissions and promote sustainable development and energy efficiency since it became the first Spanish town to join the Covenant of Mayors for the Environment.
More than 200 municipal officers have participated in the International Conference on Municipal Energy Plans 'Energy City' in which the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, explained some of the initiatives have been launched in the town.
The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, has participated in the International Conference on Municipal Energy Plans 'Energy City', which presented the Local Action Plan that promotes Puerto Lumbreras to promote sustainable development and energy efficiency after becoming the first Spanish town to join the Covenant of Mayors.
"Our Municipality designed its own Local Action Plan for sustainable development and energy efficiency, which was established as an innovative framework for climate change adaptation and mitigation of emissions of greenhouse gases in the municipality "explained Sanchez.
Among the actions that includes the new Local Action Plan of Puerto Lumbreras who have already developed features a Sustainable Mobility Plan includes service free bike for providing citizens with more transportation friendly environment.
Other actions already being developed, is the installation of photovoltaic panels to supply electricity in 15 public buildings, or the future operation of a biogas plant that will power and heat through organic matter.
Other measures
Specifically, the energy and industry sector, the Plan includes various measures such as implementation of systems that use clean and renewable energy in municipal facilities and equipment and in different sectors of the municipality, the rationalization of consumption of machinery and equipment municipal and optimize energy consumption in public lighting.
Moreover, to reduce CO2 emissions as foreseen by the Covenant of Mayors, the municipality put in place measures aimed at reducing waste, such as the placement of container piles on sidewalks, drive products and recycled materials through the creation of an association of waste recovery, the promotion of separate collection of bulky waste and the implementation of new infrastructure and services for street cleaning to be accompanied by public awareness campaigns that promote sustainable consumption among all citizens of Puerto Lumbreras.
Energy City
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to provide examples such as the Energy Plans of Puerto Lumbreras, to promote such initiatives in other municipalities and achieve the goals that mark the Covenant of Mayors for the Environment.
Thus, among the patterns that mark the European Plan, highlights "reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 20 percent and reduce energy costs.
As part of the first International Conference on Municipal Energy Plans 'Energy City', organized by the Energy Agency of the Region of Murcia, ARGEM, 200 technicians have been trained on how to develop local plans to promote energy saving and efficiency in the municipalities.
