IU-Greens has reported today that the Commonwealth of Puerto Lumbreras Irrigation already warned in 2007 of the exploitation of the bed of the Rambla de Béjar for the extraction of aggregates and gravel used in the construction of a mall in Lorca.
The leftist organization explained that the proposed promenade, on which rested the bridge linking Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras, which sank after rains last Friday, was damaged by mining, which lowered three to five meters the level the channel.
The Community Irrigation criticized extraction, which was authorized by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), represented "significant" environmental damage and prevented the entry of flood waters through the network of sluices of both sides, and the promenade was in a "terrible state".
The coordinator of IU-Greens in the Region of Murcia, José Antonio Pujante, has stated that "with this background, it is even more urgent to conduct an inquiry into the collapse of the bridge, to correct this type of action in the face and future of accountability ".
