The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, receive the Certificate of eea ® European Energy Award in Brussels next week, in a ceremony chaired by the Commissioner for Energy of the European Union, Günther Oettinger.
Puerto Lumbreras achieved the certificate after undergoing an energy audit in which positively evaluated various energy and environmental variables.
Puerto Lumbreras has become the first Spanish town to be certified eea European Energy Award ® measuring the energy efficiency of European cities and the sponsor of a town as 'Sustainable Municipality'.
Thus, the Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger EU will present the certificate to the Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras in a ceremony to be held next week in Brussels.
In this sense, the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, explained that "Puerto Lumbreras has become in recent years sustainable growth a priority, and so we became the first municipality in Spain who accepted the challenge of the Covenant of Mayors. A through more hundred more concrete measures in the energy sector we have reduced CO2 emissions considerably and now our town has become the first Spanish city to get the certificate from the European Energy Award ".
Thus, the certificate distinguishes Puerto Lumbreras as Sustainable Municipality, after decreasing in recent years by 37% CO2 emissions after the implementation of a Local Action Plan framed within the Covenant of Mayors of the European Union and the Strategic Plan 2008-2012 Ecopuerto with which the town has developed over 150 specific measures to promote sustainable development and environmental respect.
Thus, Sanchez said that "the commitment of Puerto Lumbreras in its action extends to all possible areas, through energy efficiency, transport, expanding green spaces, or waste management among others."
Thus, Puerto Lumbreras participates in the European Union project Medeea team which coordinates local guidelines of energy and environmental policy.
It has been developed in the city with an energy audit that has been determined to give the town the Certificate of European Energy Award ® eea making Puerto Lumbreras in the first Spanish town to get this certificate.
In the audit, Puerto Lumbreras has exceeded over 63% of the analyzed variables related to sustainable mobility, energy supply, waste management or energy efficiency systems in municipal facilities.
Note that the methodology eea ® seal has been approved by the European Commission as an effective tool for the implementation of the Covenant of Mayors who have signed over 2,000 cities representing more than 130 million people across Europe.
This methodology has been adopted in major European cities such as Zurich, Bonn, Lausanne and Münster.
In this sense, the method of eea ® was established as the process by which European municipalities energy planning designed to reduce emissions and promote the use of renewable energy.
Thus the eea ® seal certifies performing municipalities and cities overexertion in the field of energy, especially in energy efficiency.
