The Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism receives the Mayor after obtaining the certificate that guarantees European Energy Award to Puerto Lumbreras as 'Sustainable City' (03/06/2013)

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, presented to the Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism Jose Manuel Soria, the new Sustainable Energy Plan are designed after becoming the first town in Spain to be awarded the European Energy Certificate Award (eea ®) that endorses as 'Sustainable City'.

The new Sustainable Energy Plan includes more than 100 measures to boost energy efficiency and savings in the locality.

The Minister of Industry, Energy and Turimo, José Manuel Soria has received the Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, after obtaining the certificate of the European Energy Award (eea ®) that guarantees to Puerto Lumbreras as 'Sustainable City'.

Thus, during the meeting Sanchez has introduced the new Sustainable Energy Plan that are designed in the town after becoming the first town in Spain to receive the Certificate of the European Energy Award (eea ®).

In this regard, Sanchez explained that "for the past 8 years we have managed to considerably reduce CO2 emissions by up to 37%, which has allowed our town to become the first Spanish city to get the certificate from the European Energy Award ".

Thus, the Commissioner of European Union Energy, Günther Oettinger presented the Energy Award (eea ®) at a ceremony in Brussels to coincide with the celebration of the European Energy Forum.

Thus, the method of eea ® was established as the process by which European cities energy planning designed to reduce CO2 emissions and promote renewable energy consumption.

Eea ® methodology has been approved by the European Commission as an effective tool to implement measures to achieve the objectives of the Covenant of Mayors, which are to reduce by 20% the emissions of greenhouse gases, saving 20% ​​of energy consumption through improved energy efficiency and promote renewable energy up to 20%.

To get to obtain the certificate, Puerto Lumbreras was the first Spanish town who joined the Covenant of Mayors for the Environment, and between 2008 and 2012 Strategic Plan Ecopuerto developed to promote environmental respect and sustainable development.

Now, the City Council have designed a new Sustainable Energy Plan with more than 100 steps to further reduce CO2 emissions and encourage the use of renewable energy.

Among the more than 100 measures incorporating the Sustainable Energy Plan highlights a strong commitment to renewable energy through the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on all public buildings and street lighting renewal, or the inclusion of systems of energy and water savings.

Furthermore, it has made a firm commitment to transport through new public transport systems efficient systems have been modernized waste collection and recycling, and are developing reforestation of green spaces and the creation of new green areas in the city center.

On the other hand, among the new measures is the inclusion of new environmental criteria for public procurement, or the creation of the Municipal Energy Manager.

Also scheduled renewal of boilers, thermal biomass including in housing, the installation of luminous flux regulation and other measures aimed at raising public awareness as the Green Schools program or driving courses.

Sanchez concluded by explaining that "the commitment of Puerto Lumbreras in its action extends to all possible areas, from energy efficiency, transport, expanding green spaces, or waste management, which are as some of our immediate priorities for Puerto Lumbreras make a 'Town Green' ".
