The President of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), Miguel Angel Ródenas, the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras Eliseo Sanchez and Mayor of Vélez Rubio, Miguel Martinez-Carlon, have visited the works of eleven new flood defense embankments in the head of the Rambla de Nogalte in Vélez Rubio (Almería).
These works were contracted after the catastrophic flood of St. Wenceslas, in September last, and involves an investment of 4.6 million euros, financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and the CHS's own funds, an agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
The aim of these eleven dams is laminar and reduce flood flows that start at the top of the Rambla de Nogalte and historically and repeatedly have caused serious damage to the municipalities of Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca in Murcia, and Velez Rubio, Pulpí and Cuevas de Almanzora in Almeria.
Four of these facilities are already operational and the other seven coming online in the coming weeks.
These works are essential to mitigate the virulence of the avenues in the headwaters of these wadis Mediterranean, with great contribution of solid material have a major impact on economic assets and endanger people's lives.
