The City, through the Municipal Council has passed a motion requesting the Governing Council of the Region of Murcia to conduct a study of losses in rainfed crops.
In addition, the Municipal Council requested in the motion that Council urge the Government to seek the central government's implementation of a package of measures to combat the drought they are experiencing rainfed crops.
The Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, through the Municipal Council has unanimously approved a motion requesting the Governing Council of the Region of Murcia to undertake a comprehensive study of the losses in crops irrigated by extreme drought.
Thus, the Councillor for Agriculture, José María Parra, explained that "we are suffering of the worst droughts since 1941, marked by extreme aridity."
In addition, Parra added that "this situation is affecting rainfed crops and especially the almond".
Councillor for Agriculture, José María Parra, stressed that "Agriculture is a strategic sector that provides important economic benefits to our local economy and the lack of rainfall is causing a huge loss of productivity in woody crops".
Notably Puerto Lumbreras is an agricultural and cattle town, as the primary sector is the economic engine of the town and represents over 55% of the working population of the town.
According to 2013 statistics from the Regional Centre of Murcia, Puerto Lumbreras has 1,676 acres of upland crops, of which 1,447 are almond crop.
Therefore, the Municipal Council requested in the motion that Council urge the Government to seek the central government's implementation of a package of measures to combat the drought they are experiencing rainfed crops.
Plenary also agreed that, once the requested study, we carry out a plan to replant almonds that are dry due to drought.
Finally, they agreed to issue these agreements to the Community Irrigation Puerto Lumbreras, the ADS of the municipality, as well as BDA, FECOAM And COAG Murcia.
