Volunteers accompany experts marking and census turtles.
After three hours of census, turtles are marked, weighed, measured, and returned to the place they were found.
36 volunteers from different parts of the country as Almería, Murcia, Alicante, Madrid, Malaga and Guipúzcoa program tasks involved in tracking thighed tortoise "Testudo: a monitoring program for the conservation of tortoise populations in Spain ".
This project is promoted by the Department of Ecology at the University Miguel Hernández (UMH) and has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
In addition, concentrated effort of several associations related to the conservation of this species as the Spanish Association of Herpetology (AHE), the Association for Land Stewardship and Sustainable Development (COME), the Herpetological Association Murciana (AHEMUR), Ecologists in Action of the Region of Murcia and the Society for the Study and Recovery of Biodiversity Almeria (ROWAN);
and involves administrations and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, the Andalusian and the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia), who gave volunteers facilities Youth Hostel "Cabeza de la Jara" during the weekend.
Volunteers participate in surveys turtles in eight places, representative of the populations of southeastern Iberian coastal and pre-coastal systems Murcia and Almeria.
The turtles found were measured, tagged and geo.
This spring is expected to repeat census a couple of times during the first weeks of May and June.
The census results will be disseminated through the Information Server Amphibians and Reptiles of Spain (SIARE), managed by the Spanish Association of Herpetology.
The tasks of monitoring populations and awareness for thighed tortoise conservation are key to ensuring the future of wild populations.
This species is primarily threatened by loss and fragmentation of habitat, its holding in captivity or forest fires.
