The Friendly Cities Program Elder is an international project to help cities prepare for global demographic trends as the rapid aging of the population and increasing urbanization.
"Our goal is to keep improving and tailoring services to the needs of older people so they can enjoy a good quality of life in society and participate fully and actively" said Councilwoman Sonia Lopez.
The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, through the City Council, unanimously adopted a motion to apply for membership of the township Network Age-Friendly Cities.
Specifically, Friendly Cities Program Elder is an international project to help cities prepare for global demographic trends, such as the rapid aging of the population and increasing urbanization.
The program is aimed at environmental, social and economic factors that influence the welfare of the elderly.
Thus, Senior Councillor, Sonia Lopez, explained that "our goal is to keep improving and adapting services to the needs of older people so they can enjoy a good quality of life and participate in society fully and actively ".
Thus, with the implementation of this project the municipality wishes to reaffirm its commitment to create physical and social urban environments that promote healthy and active aging and a good quality of life for older residents.
In this sense, the Councillor stressed that "Puerto Lumbreras should be part of this project because of its experience and commitment to the citizens in terms of older people."
It is noteworthy that the Friendly Cities Program Elder has for objective recognition of the diversity of older people, promoting a culture of inclusion shared by people of all ages, respecting their decisions and lifestyle choices, and anticipate and respond flexibly to the needs and preferences related to active aging way.
Finally, note that in 2012, the Spanish Imserso and WHO signed a collaboration agreement for the dissemination, support and promotion of the network in Spain, in order to increase the adhesion of those municipalities interested in improving and adapting their environments and services to the needs of the elderly.
