The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, through the Department of Sustainable Development, has launched a campaign of treatment for plague processionary caterpillars and larvae.
Specifically, they have developed actions fumigation in the natural setting Cabezo de la Jara, in the vicinity of the youth hostel to avoid the plague of caterpillars and their typical at this time of year processionary larvae, which is harmful to the pines.
Councillor for Sustainable Development, Angela Morillas, explained that "we have started treatment to prevent insect pests in some pine forests of the municipality with the intention of preventing the proliferation of processionary, a caterpillar that can cause damage to trees and problems allergic to people with high allergic sensitivity. "
Thus processionary produces two types of damage: in plants and humans.
Processionary caterpillars have a major irritant and allergic effect on humans, in very severe cases.
