The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras proposed expansion and addition of new uses for the Astronomical Observatory Cabezo de la Jara, with the creation of 'Star City', a performance that will take place in the city-owned parcel adjacent to which is currently the observatory.
The event will consist in building a complex in a single plant of organic form that fits the landscape features and plants in the field, the study of this project is based primarily on ensuring that there is a display of 360 °, ie each and every one of the addresses to the outside of Cabezo de la Jara, once the visitor access into the building.
The complex will be composed also by the equipment necessary for the work of stargazing, his explanation and learning, as well as gazebo building.
The organization of the floor of the building reveals two clear intentions, on the one hand to get a free plant, clear, in which the movements of visitors in the building are as variable as possible, and in turn, clear the perimeter the same way that it has a viewpoint on display.
The open plan has a distribution in "flower" by providing each of the "arms" and particular use mainly organized and sinuous organic shapes that reflect the movement of visitors inside.
Distribution would also set an access area, reception and control, services, storage, housing and hall (where there will be an area for temporary exhibitions), a permanent exhibition area, auditorium, planetarium, center for the interpretation of the stars (223 m2 space where you can study the location of stars, planets and constellations) and the construction of two new observatories (42 m2 each and a capacity for 100 people, equipped with latest technology such as material 500 mm Cassegrain telescope F9 astrosital, RC 400 mm F8 reflactor astrosital and TOA 150 telescope with accessories).
Convergent shape "arms" to the center of the building shows a directionality of movement towards a point where the ladder stood communication with passable cover to be used for night-sky visions.
The current observatory is locked in a court created by the building to bend one of these "arms" on itself as a landmark sculpture.
Thus expanding the current building surround, with no overlap between the old and the new project.
The front conforms to a fully glazed with the possibility of using different types of glass: transparent areas of maximum interest (as the viewpoint), the artificial silk screened motif that resembles an abstract interpretation of nature close to or mirror glass in order to produce new experiences for the reflection of the elements in the environment so that the project's visual impact is minimized.
Inside, floor plans drawn and a roof with an artificial simulation of the constellations using small dots of light.
As regards the annex to the building space generates three types of situations, the threshold for access and entrance to the building, plant the yard with the old observatory and two more private and rear balconies on the top of Cabezo de la Jara .
All of them are raised with native vegetation where water requirements are minimal and the use of land and aggregate colors.
Also, the exterior finishes will be executed in white on the observatory's technical requirements to achieve a proper night vision.
According to the mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, 'the construction is executed with the utmost respect for the natural environment, framed in what might be called' sustainable architecture 'and will contain technical systems more efficient as far as sustainability is concerned.
This will take various measures, such as, minimizing the clearing of land to do so the building will rely on a light, a light metal structure on the ground.
Be placed further solar collection systems on deck for an energy efficient performance of all building facilities, will be screened natural ventilation system of the building, as well as different and special treatment for each facade orientation by simple constructive solutions but efficient to reduce energy expenditure necessary for the conditioning of the building.
