Almond Project (MUR-AL) is an initiative to revalue the cultivation of almonds and all economic, cultural and tourism generated around this crop in the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, and several municipalities in the Region Thanks to the local government and the European Union, who will launch a project that seeks to reposition economically and culturally a very important crop in the community.
The value of almond Murcia goes far beyond being a strategic crop in rainfed areas, for the same reason, the Government of Murcia presented last July this initiative where 22 locations in the region will benefit from nearly eleven million euros, of which 70 percent comes from fund EAFRD European Union and the rest of the Revitalization Plan for the Economy and Employment in the Region of Murcia.
Almond draft picks among other actions creating a 'Museum Almond' that will develop positive impact on the socioeconomic environment of Puerto Lumbreras to start a cultural and tourist infrastructure as well as develop awareness activities and environmental information in a project that will extend over the next three years, generating growth and quality employment through differentiation and innovation of the trademark and appellation of origin, focusing on innovation and internationalization, diversifying the economy toward activities emerging and getting the job is attractive and of higher quality.
The almond crop is of great environmental importance in the region and therefore in Puerto Lumbreras, being the region's third almond-producing province in Spain, there is a great tradition in that culture and having an area of much higher operating average of Spain.
The almond plays a major role in maintaining the landscape as it is half the struggle against desertification and erosion.
The Museum is an innovative initiative to be unique in Spain and is the basis physical, cultural and tourist product of the almond tree in Puerto Lumbreras.
The Museum of the Almond will have areas designated for exhibition and sale of products made from this fruit, history of women in agriculture and environmental adaptation.
The museum will also promote the culture and traditions in relation to the cultivation of almond wood-based content of almond, almond tree flowers and almond variety.
This project will be the backbone of reference and the image of the almond creating a physical space to promote culture and recovering the same traditions based on the kernel as: recipes, stories, folk songs, romances, strengthen tourism with new products that promote arrival of visitors to the city, improve the natural environment and environmental quality, public awareness about the care and respect for the environment and responsible consumption of natural resources, establish links between the Mediterranean cultures, united by the cultivation of almond trees and, to make visible the contribution of women in the agricultural sector.
With this new infrastructure will also unite the region through integrated projects for urban and rural regeneration, with an integrated urban planning, creating in this way, public areas to improve services in places of tourist attraction.
In this way the building will meet the energy saving recommendations framed in the 'Strategy for Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency in Spain 2004-2012' and will be integrated into the rural landscape of the area and be environmentally friendly.
Likewise, the creation of this museum, established as strategic for the agricultural sector quality and innovation from maintaining their competitive differentiation and seeking new markets, increasing agricultural production coordination with the food industry, encourage the marketing of quality products and innovative through the creation of quality marks and certificates of origin, ensuring respect for the environment and energy saving.
"Puerto Lumbreras joins, the initiative promoted by the Autonomous Community, with a strong presence because the town has always been characterized by the cultivation of almonds, artisan pastry base of Puerto Lumbreras, at a time that the status of this crop does not go through a good time.
The creation of the Museum of Almond will be a tourist product that will offer visitors Puerto Lumbreras', as noted by the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.
