The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, accompanied by several mayors of the Consistory lumbrerense, among whom was the mayor of Health, Gloria Matilde García has participated this morning in the activities organized to mark the 'World Diabetes Day' (on November 14th) at the booth installed in the main street of Puerto Lumbreras, Rigoberta Menchu.
The activities are mainly aimed at raising awareness of the fact that all lumbrerenses with diabetes or at risk of suffering at their disposal the information related to respect for a better education, prevention and care possible to the disease.
Also, through the Department of Health has set up an information tent on a main street in Puerto Lumbreras, "with opening hours from 10:00 to 13:00, where it has glucose testing more of 400 residents interested in sugar levels fast, easy and free ', as highlighted by the mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.
'It's time to realize that a healthy lifestyle can help prevent diabetic complications in people with this disease and which do not yet have, thus, our continued support for activities that promote and report on life healthy as well as the commemoration of World Day to extend them to other people ', as noted Sanchez.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, to prevent this disease is recommended that adequate information and education on diabetes, a controlled diet, exercise, proper administration of the medication required and active participation of the diabetic.
It is estimated that in Puerto Lumbreras, about 2,000 people, have diabetes, about 14% of the population lumbrerense.
This percentage would be extrapolated to the rest of the regional population where 50% of it are not aware of it.
The reality is that anyone, anywhere, at any age can be affected by this disease.
It is expected that the number of people with diabetes will double by 2025.
Currently in the Spanish population has more than 2 million affected, besides being one of the top 10 causes of death in most European countries.
