Representatives of the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras have held a working meeting with members of the department of ecology and hydrology at the University of Murcia to jointly develop the Project CARTOPUERTO, this project would conduct a map updating and development of an Environmental Atlas of Puerto Lumbreras.
For its part, the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez explained that "the ultimate goal of this project will have a reliable cartographic base for modeling and future projections of climate change impacts, to guide local planning and to tackle successfully ECOPUERTO 2008-2012 Strategic Plan.
PROJECT CARTOPUERTO the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras have a map database of the major environmental issues on which will standardize a system of monitoring and follow up to ensure the sustainable management of the municipality.
Also within the framework of environmental education and outreach, CARTOPUERTO City offers the opportunity to develop and publish various materials, or general case, which reflect the main character and environmental values of the municipality and may be distributed to students, visitors and the population general.
All this without losing sight of the technical utility of the results and their implementation in ECOPUERTO, Local Agenda 21, urban and industrial management.
CARTOPUERTO is innovative from the standpoint of Research & Development & Technological Innovation (I + D + i), in this sense would set the stage for a truly effective municipal environmental management.
On the other hand, this project would become a pioneering work because Puerto Lumbreras be the first municipality in the Region of Murcia in having this type of environmental characterization and reflected subsequently reflected in a provision of cartographic maps and guides.
