Puerto Lumbreras has significantly increased organic production currently accounts for 12% of agricultural land with more than 1,200 hectares.
The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras participates in International Fair "Fruit Logistica" in Berlin which takes place between 3 and 5 February.
The Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, escorted by the councilman of Agriculture, Water and hamlets, José María Parra, has attended the International Fair where they presented the Organic Farming Campaign that promotes lumbrerense consistory, and that has allowed to significantly increase this type production in the county, reaching 12% of the local agricultural area with more than 1,200 hectares.
"Since the City Council are carrying out concrete actions to improve the marketing of organic products with the aim of strengthening the development and growth of the organic farmers in the municipality.
With the participation of the business session and at the International lumbrerenses "Fruit Logistica", which aim to increase the volume of contacts and explore new commercial networks for this new agricultural model, "said the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.
Farming Campaign developed by the City Council in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture (SEAE) includes a free advice service in order to accompany the farmers in the process of conversion to this type of agriculture.
Moreover, they are developing various training activities and technical sessions for both farmers and herders can form, specialize and adapt their crops to the ecological model.
Organic farming is a farming system basing on the optimal use of natural resources without using chemicals or genetically encoded.
This agricultural practice preserves the fertility of the land and respects the environment in a sustainable and balanced.
Specifically, in the town of Puerto Lumbreras predominantly organic crops are almonds, olives for olive oil, and vegetables grown outdoors and in greenhouses.
This new system of agricultural production brings many economic benefits as increased income of farmers through the reduction of external economic dependence.
In addition, it supports a greater number of renewable resources, maintaining the genetic diversity of the natural environment and avoid any contamination-free food producing chemical waste.
Finally, during the International Fair "Fruit Logistica", which is considered the most important horticultural fair in the world, the Mayor concluded by explaining that "Puerto Lumbreras is a town committed to agriculture and the environment.
